IIRC their contract offer took the piss last time but he surely would sign if the right wage offer was there.
Probably could even get away with paying no transfer fee, but giving a striker in return.

If Simpson does move to Southend, I wouldn't mind Adam Barrett coming to us as part of the deal - he might be 37, but we are desperate for a decent defender or two, Barrett has played a dozen or so games this Season in League One so I'm guessing he hasn't lost it yet completely.

Interesting that the Club announced the release of Doherty and Ben...whatever his name is ! Must have been agreed by someone, hopefully Mr B and just maybe at the same time he has authorised a bit of cash for AE - I live in hope, because I think that with the right 3 or 4 coming in our league status might have a good chance of being retained, but I'm not holding my breath that Mr B will, indeed, open his wallet, although surely he will allow AE to at least replace like for like ?

All Barrett's appearances came in the first part of the season when Southend were dogshite. They since got in Anton Ferdinand and have been in really good form.
He would come in, be roasted for pace in his first game and then become another Alan Dunne.

He is the type of leader that we need but IMO with Mezague coming back there isn't really a case for another centre-back coming in now. We already have three senior pros plus Pollock, plus Hunt as cover. The funds would be better spent elsewhere.

If it were to happen this window Bechetti would have to stump up the funds to get rid of Dunne and Janse who are out of favour but still eating up the funds, I don't see that happening.

Not worth building a team around him then.

I think if they follow AE instructions for each game and play with determination they will be fine.

What I really want to see is Simpson playing. There apparently has been no offers. I read somewhere by another poster that he had played 99 games and 100 sets up new contract clauses or stuff. Hey, we need to win and score. He faster of the mark than anyone else at this club and we oftern create chances but others like the last game do not take them. Thats why a simple mistake by a defender becomes so critical rather than just a mistake that we forget.

Cant they agree to vary the contract by verbal agreement so he can play, to get him on the pitch and if he can score then he will be even more desirable to another club watching him.

How many managers will not have spoken to to their owner about who they would like in the transfer window! We are beyond a joke.

This. If we were a normal club with a normal owner, this would have been decided on during December. Targets would then have been lined up and brought in on January 1st onwards ,just like Barnet did.

Don't care what people think, he can't be any worse than either Parkes or Erichot, even at 37 years of age.
