I like them. ;)

Might just be that when I was on the N55 last week it terminated at Wanstead instead of Woodford Wells

Got to the bus stop at Tottenham Court Road at around 3am... Literally only just got in thanks to about three cancelled buses, and the one that arrived terminating at Baker's Arms...

That's a very good point. I only drove one in training for a few days from a local garage before going to Chiswick and driving RM's. I never experienced it in heavy traffic that one would do during a shift.

I've been on a few post buses in the wilds of Scotland. You sit with the postie in the back of his van whilst he delivers the mail.

I used to get the X1 from Southend to Gatwick on a Sunday night. Often I was the only one on it and it went all over the houses. It brings back memories of misery as I hated living in Crawley and just wanted to be back home.

Did the old EN X1 go to Gatwick? Thought it was Southend>Rayleigh>London.

I know back in the 60s there was an X30 service from Southend>Southsea via Crawley, and even a couple of X2x services from Southend that passed thru Tun Wells towards South Coast termini. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern ... us_Company

It was a long time ago before I passed my driving test, about 1984. It went Southend to Brighton via Gatwick and Crawley and all around the houses avoiding the M25 mostly. It went through the amusingly named Pratts Bottom.

I remember it as I used to get all miserable about going back to Crawley and normally I was the only one on the bus on a Sunday night.

Actually Slacker, after reading your post I might have got my bus numbers mixed up! I think the X1 might have been a Southend-London-Heathrow-Reading service. I used to go on it when I was a plane spotter to Heathrow. It was always delayed in London.

I'm now not sure of the Gatwick bus. I think it was a joint service between Southend Transport and a Sussex company? It definitely terminated in Brighton.

The mind boggles at the thought of a London to Jaywick Sands service!

I've read a book I think called 'Great British Bus Journeys'.
