Great British Hoaxes

PostPosted by Leopold Bloom » Mon Jun 19, 2017 10:15 am

Anyone think of any? My 3 suggestions are: Piltdown Man, Panorama's April Fool's " The Spaghetti Harvest is in " and finally the Dunkin' Doughnut takeover bid ( the doughnut part is most appropriate ).

Harry Hole :- I remember when all computers were meant to die on 1st Jan 2000.
I worked for BT International at the time & BT were worried ( not about themselves but 3rd World Countries ). Normally we had 3 people working from 20.00 hours to 08.00 hours every day of the year. Management were a bit nervy, so they doubled up the rota's from Friday night right up to Monday night. Most people who weren't on rota, were off as it was a week-end or Bank Holiday. So over that period we were invited to join the rota. All time was triple hours for that period & a day off in lieu PLUS £50 an hour bonus! I was not particularly bothered as we had good money coming in anyway and I like to be at home that time of the year. Anyway I was asked to cover the A duty ( which was Monday Tuesday & Wednesday nights ). I loved them as it was only a 3 day week and you often got asked in on the Friday day time as overtime, so you had all day Thursday to recover from the nights. So I jumped at it. I got all my usual night shift perks, plus triple time from 20.00 hours to Midnight and a day off in lieu plus 4 X £50 bonus. Normally 3 persons is more than enough, but we had 6 for the Monday night. I might add that New Years day is much bigger across the rest of the World than the UK. I think all we did was watch TV & sleep. It was really quiet. Happy days! The trouble with retirement, is that when you are a bit broke, you can't get in any overtime.
